What Does the Bible Say About Gambling?

  • While the word "gambling" doesn’t appear, the Bible offers clear principles:

Five Biblical Principles on Gambling:

1. Gambling disregards responsible stewardship

  • Key Verses:

    • Psalm 24:1 – "The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it."

    • 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 – "You are not your own."

    • Matthew 25 (Parable of Talents) – Stewardship involves wise management.

  • Reflection: Is gambling a faithful use of God’s entrusted resources?

2. Gambling violates the command to love others

  • Key Verses:

    • 1 Corinthians 10:24 – "No one should seek their own good, but the good of others."

    • Matthew 22:39 – "Love your neighbor as yourself."

    • Romans 14 – Don’t cause others to stumble.

  • Application: Gambling profits from others' losses; it exploits weakness and desperation.

3. Gambling contradicts the biblical work ethic

  • Key Verse:

    • 2 Thessalonians 3:10 – "If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat."

  • Reflection: Scripture values diligence, faithfulness, and labor, not shortcuts or luck.

4. Gambling is fueled by greed (idolatry)

  • Key Verse:

    • Luke 12:15 – "Beware of covetousness."

  • Insight: Gambling feeds greed, transforming desire for more into idolatry.

5. Gambling promotes trust in luck, not God’s providence

  • Key Verse:

    • Isaiah 65:11-15 – Rebukes trust in "Fortune" and "Destiny."

  • Reflection: God wants our reliance on His provision, not chance.
